How Does CBD Support the Endocannabinoid System?
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a natural regulatory system found in all mammals, including humans. It helps maintain internal balance (homeostasis) and influences a wide range of bodily functions, including sleep, immunity, mood, appetite, recovery, pain perception, and nervous system activity.
The ECS consists of three main components:
- Endocannabinoids – compounds naturally produced by the body (such as anandamide and 2-AG).
- Receptors – CB1 receptors are found primarily in the brain and nervous system, while CB2 receptors are located mainly in the immune system and peripheral tissues.
- Enzymes – responsible for producing and breaking down endocannabinoids (such as the FAAH enzyme).
This is where cannabidiol (CBD) comes into play. Unlike THC, CBD does not bind directly to cannabinoid receptors. Instead, it indirectly influences their activity and helps the ECS function more efficiently.
How Exactly Does CBD Affect the Body?
- It inhibits the FAAH enzyme, which breaks down anandamide – often referred to as the body's natural “bliss molecule.” As a result, anandamide remains active longer and may positively influence mood, motivation, and resilience to stress.
- It modulates CB1 and CB2 receptor activity, helping to maintain balance within both the nervous and immune systems.
- It interacts with other receptors, including serotonin receptors (5-HT1A), adenosine receptors, and TRPV1 receptors, all of which play important roles in regulating pain, inflammation, stress, and sleep.
- It supports natural homeostasis, helping the body maintain internal balance without producing psychoactive effects.

What Do Experts Think About CBD?
Lucka Kolaříková is a psychologist who leads a variety of educational programs and workshops. Since 2020, she has personally tested CBD products herself and regularly recommends them to her clients.
CBD Benefits for Mental Health and Stress
More and more healthcare professionals are incorporating CBD into their practice. Users most commonly report positive effects such as reduced stress and anxiety, and many also use CBD as part of their approach to managing depressive symptoms.
CBD interacts with serotonin receptors (5-HT1A) and may help regulate cortisol levels, the body's primary stress hormone. This may explain why many users describe a sense of “inner calm” without feeling intoxicated or impaired. Research published in 2024 systematically confirmed CBD's anxiety-reducing effects while reporting only minimal side effects.
CBD may be beneficial for:
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
- Social Anxiety Disorder
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Mild to moderate depressive symptoms
- Chronic stress related to work overload and burnout
CBD Benefits for Sleep
CBD may help with insomnia and other sleep disorders, contributing to improved overall well-being and a more positive mood.
Its effects appear to be twofold: CBD may reduce anxiety and tension, which are among the most common causes of insomnia, while also naturally supporting deep sleep (slow-wave sleep) and REM sleep phases. Unlike conventional sleep medications, CBD does not suppress these restorative sleep stages and may actually help prolong them, as demonstrated in a 2025 clinical study.

CBD Benefits for Pain Relief
Pain can significantly affect quality of life, and many people look for natural ways to manage it. CBD may help relieve pain through two primary mechanisms:
- It interacts with the endocannabinoid system and influences receptors involved in various types of pain, including difficult-to-treat neuropathic pain.
- It has anti-inflammatory properties, which may help reduce pain caused by inflammation.
A 2024 review analyzing 40 studies confirmed CBD's anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. For optimal results, we recommend combining a systemic product such as CBD oil or capsules with a topical product like a CBD gel or patch applied directly to the affected area.
How Does CBD Affect the Brain?
CBD is non-psychoactive and does not alter perception. You do not need to worry about feeling intoxicated or being unable to drive after using it.
CBD is believed to provide neurological, neuroprotective, and analgesic benefits. It may also help reduce anxiety and improve sleep quality. At the molecular level, CBD inhibits the FAAH enzyme, increasing levels of anandamide—the body's natural “bliss molecule”—within the brain.

CBD and Alzheimer's Disease – Breakthrough Research (2025–2026)
Alzheimer's disease is one of the areas where CBD research has made some of the most significant advances in recent years. A Spanish study published in 2025 in Alzheimer's Research & Therapy was the first to comprehensively demonstrate that CBD may reduce the formation of pathological tau and amyloid beta proteins, suppress neuroinflammation, improve spatial memory, and support neuronal regeneration in the brain. The researchers described CBD as a “multi-target therapeutic approach.”
Even more remarkable findings came from a 2026 study published in Molecular Psychiatry. Researchers reported that a single dose of CBD reversed more than 75% of the molecular changes associated with early-stage Alzheimer's disease, including changes involving proteins, inflammation, and synaptic structures.
While these findings currently come from animal models and still require confirmation in human clinical trials, they represent some of the strongest scientific evidence to date supporting CBD's potential role in neurodegenerative diseases.
CBD and Autism, ADHD
The endocannabinoid system plays a crucial role in regulating the nervous system, and recent research suggests that children with autism may have lower levels of endocannabinoids. CBD may help support balance within this system.
A 2025 systematic review involving 494 patients found that CBD-rich formulations may improve sleep quality, social interaction, and anxiety symptoms in individuals with autism spectrum disorder. In addition, NYU Langone Health is currently conducting clinical research investigating CBD use in children with autism and ADHD.
Feedback from customers also reflects this growing interest. Among users of CBD products, parents of children with autism represent one of the most active groups, and their long-term experiences have generally been very positive.
Is CBD Safe to Use?
As we have seen, CBD is a naturally occurring compound found in the cannabis plant and is associated with a growing number of scientifically studied benefits. But is it truly safe for long-term use?
The only FDA- and EMA-approved CBD-based medication is Epidiolex, which is prescribed for certain forms of epilepsy. Its safety profile demonstrates an important point: the daily amounts of CBD found in dietary supplements are often hundreds or even thousands of times lower than the doses used in pharmaceutical clinical trials.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has stated that there is currently no evidence suggesting that the presence of CBD in food products is inherently unsafe.
The World Health Organization (WHO) Expert Committee on Drug Dependence concluded that pure cannabidiol does not appear to have abuse potential and is unlikely to cause harm to human health.
A 2025 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, involving more than 200 volunteers over a four-week period, found that CBD was generally well tolerated. A small proportion of participants (approximately 5%) experienced temporary increases in liver enzyme levels, which is why caution is recommended for long-term use.
CBD Benefits for Mental Well-Being
An increasing number of healthcare professionals are incorporating CBD into their practice. One example is psychologist Lucie Kolaříková, who has shared her experiences using CBD both personally and with her clients. Many users report reduced stress and anxiety, while others find CBD beneficial as part of their approach to managing depression.
Can I Take CBD Together with Medication?
In general, customer feedback regarding the use of CBD alongside prescription medications has been positive. However, it is advisable not to take CBD supplements and medications at exactly the same time. Ideally, leave a gap of at least one to two hours between them.
We strongly recommend that anyone taking prescription medications consult their healthcare provider before starting CBD. Particular caution is advised for individuals taking blood thinners or medications used to manage low blood pressure.
We explore this topic in greater detail in our article: Combining CBD with Medications.
Combining CBD with Medications – A Practical Perspective

In practice, we frequently encounter people who combine CBD with prescription medications without any issues. Nevertheless, caution is important. CBD may affect liver enzymes (CYP450), potentially influencing how certain medications are metabolized. For this reason, I always recommend starting with a low dosage, monitoring your body's response, and discussing CBD use with your physician if you take medications regularly.

What Is the Difference Between CBD Products from Different Manufacturers?
The differences can be quite significant, even if they may not seem obvious at first glance. A CBD oil from one manufacturer may affect you differently than a product from another. This is primarily due to differences in production methods and extract quality.
For the best possible results, we always recommend using full-spectrum CBD oils (drops). These oils contain a complete spectrum of cannabinoids (including THC, but only within legally permitted non-psychoactive limits).
With full-spectrum oils, you benefit from the combined action of multiple cannabis compounds. Scientists have found that cannabinoids work together synergistically in what is known as the entourage effect, where the individual compounds enhance each other's effects.
Let's Take a Closer Look at the Components of Full-Spectrum CBD Oils and Their Effects:
An ideal CBD product contains:
- 1–20% CBD (depending on the selected product)
- < 0.2% THC (legal throughout the Czech Republic and the European Union)
- CBC (trace amounts) – may support bone growth, reduce inflammation, and help relieve pain
- CBGA (trace amounts) – may help reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and slow bacterial growth
- CBG (trace amounts) – may support sleep, bone growth, and help slow bacterial growth
- CBDA (trace amounts) – may help reduce inflammation
How Can CBD Be Used?
CBD is available in many forms, with CBD oils and capsules being the most popular. Other options include vaporization, cosmetics, and hemp-based food products.
Topical CBD products such as creams, gels, and cosmetics are applied directly to the skin and do not enter the bloodstream in the same way as oral products. CBD cosmetics are ideal for localized applications, such as temporary pain relief, while oral products are generally preferred for longer-term support.
How Much CBD Should I Take?
The first step is determining why you want to use cannabidiol. Each method of consumption differs in both onset time and the duration of its effects.
CBD dosage is highly individual and depends on many factors, including body weight, metabolism, sensitivity, and the reason for use. We recommend reading our article on proper CBD dosing to learn more about choosing the right amount for your needs.

Can CBD Be Used for Animals?
Just like humans, animals also have their own endocannabinoid system, and CBD works in much the same way for them as it does for us. You can learn everything in the article CBD effects for dogs. Unlike humans, however, animals are not able to process THC, which is why they should be given THC-free products – specifically CBD oils for dogs.
How Do the Effects of CBD Hemp Differ from Marijuana?
While the use of CBD hemp is legal and involves only non-psychoactive hemp varieties, marijuana is a plant with psychoactive effects and illegal use. CBD dietary supplements may only be produced from legal hemp varieties.
Is CBD Legal?
Yes, the use of CBD dietary supplements derived from legally cultivated hemp plants, regularly tested for THC content, is legal.
