Effects of CBD oil for sleep
Insomnia has its reasons – whether they are psychological or physiological. CBD drops for sleep help ease these causes and thereby improve sleep quality. We have covered this topic in detail in this article: Hemp for sleep.
CBD affects sleep in several ways:
- It reduces anxiety and prolonged psychological pressure – one of the most common causes of insomnia. CBD acts on serotonin receptors and helps calm the mind before bedtime.
- It regulates cortisol levels – the hormone associated with mental overload, which can make it difficult to fall asleep when elevated. CBD may help lower these levels.
- It supports deep sleep phases (SWS) and REM sleep – these phases are essential for body regeneration, immunity, memory and mental well-being.
- It helps relieve pain and inflammation, which may disrupt sleep in people with chronic conditions.
CBD oil vs. sleeping pills
Many people reach for sleeping medication when dealing with insomnia, but unfortunately these products may also have side effects. There is also a significant risk of developing dependence on these medicines, which is why most of them are available only on prescription.
That is why it makes sense to consider a natural alternative without side effects! CBD is an ideal choice.

CBD drops for sleep influence the sleep cycle and support the deep sleep and REM sleep phases. Unlike common sleeping medicines, they do not suppress the REM phase (as benzodiazepines, for example, do), but instead help prolong it.
If you would still prefer tablets, we also offer CBD capsules.
What do the latest studies say about CBD and sleep?
Breakthrough clinical study from 2025 (Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine): The largest and highest-quality study on CBD and sleep to date. This randomized, placebo-controlled crossover study involving 125 people with insomnia examined the effects of an oral combination of CBD (300 mg) and terpenes administered for 4 weeks. The results showed that CBD with terpenes significantly increased the proportion of deep sleep (SWS) and REM sleep – by almost one hour per night compared with placebo. Unlike many over-the-counter and prescription sleeping medications, this combination did not suppress the restorative phases of sleep but supported them.
Clinical study from 2024 (Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine): A randomized pilot study examined 150 mg of CBD taken nightly for 2 weeks. The CBD group showed higher objective sleep efficiency after 2 weeks of treatment and better overall well-being scores throughout the study compared with placebo.
An older but still frequently cited study: In an open-label study of 72 adult patients, sleep scores improved during the first month in 66.7% of participants. Anxiety scores decreased in almost 80% of patients. These data support the view that CBD helps particularly in people whose insomnia is rooted in anxiety and prolonged mental overload.
The overall picture of research shows that CBD works best for insomnia linked to anxiety, persistent mental pressure or pain, and that its combination with terpenes such as linalool, myrcene or beta-caryophyllene may further enhance its sleep-supporting effects.
CBD oil dosage for sleep
CBD dosage is influenced by many factors, but remember: less is sometimes more. Therefore, start gradually and increase slowly if needed.
In our hemp advisory service, we have found it effective for customers to start with hemp tea – either choosing the Extra option or Good Sleep tea – and combining it with oil or capsules. Start with one cup of hemp tea, prepared around six o’clock in the evening. Add one tablespoon of the herb to a mug of about 300 ml, add 1/4 teaspoon of coconut fat (cannabinoids dissolve in fats – this maximizes the effect) and pour over boiled water. Leave to steep for about 10–15 minutes.
Then, about 1 hour before bedtime, apply 5 drops of CBD Extra for sleep (or CBD drops for sleep). If this amount is not effective enough and no effect appears during the first 2–3 days, increase the dose by 2–3 drops until you reach the amount that provides the desired effect. If you wake up during the night, you can also take the bedtime dose during the night.
CBD capsules are another alternative to CBD drops. They are used especially when the problem is sleep duration – ideally 2–3 capsules before bedtime:
If you take other conventional medicines, we always recommend leaving a gap between the medication and CBD (at least 2 hours is recommended).
Other sleep alternatives from Cannadorra
In addition to classic CBD drops and capsules, our range also includes other natural products to support sleep, which may work on their own or combine very well with CBD:
BCP Good Sleep drops
They are a specially formulated blend containing beta-caryophyllene (BCP) – a natural terpene with significant anti-inflammatory and calming properties. BCP binds directly to CB2 receptors of the endocannabinoid system, naturally helping the body calm down before bedtime. The result is deeper relaxation, easier falling asleep and a calmer night. The drops are a great choice for those looking for a natural solution for insomnia without CBD, and they can also be excellently combined with CBD drops for a synergistic effect.
Sleep and relax patches
They are a discreet and convenient alternative for those who prefer a transdermal (through the skin) form of application. Simply apply the patch before bedtime and the active substances are released gradually throughout the night. This ensures a stable and smooth effect without fluctuations – unlike drops, whose effect gradually wears off. The patches are ideal especially for people who wake up during the night or for those who forget to take drops regularly.

Does CBD oil for sleep have side effects?
CBD has virtually no side effects, so you should not experience any. Clinical studies from 2024 and 2025 confirmed that CBD was well tolerated in the observed groups with no safety signals. However, if your sleep problem persists or even worsens, we recommend stopping CBD use and contacting your doctor.
