Cannabis or hemp both have the same origin. Their mother plant is Cannabis sativa which contains tetrahydrocannabinol  (THC). In general, marijuana (cannabis) contains about thirty percent of THC and hemp about 0.2%, which is almost none. This is believed to be the major difference between them and puts hemp on the list of legally grown plants in many of the world's regions. Marijuana, due to its high THC content, bears a psychoactive effect, is classed as a drug, and is illegal to be widely distributed throughout the retail shops (some nations exempt marijuana from the list of dangerous drugs, and its consumption or distribution are not illegal there).  Hemp has a smaller content of THC and higher content of cannabidiol (CBD). So far there haven’t been any scientifically proven cases of dependence on CBD.
