The pet is a rightful member of the family and if it feels not well or ill, you are trying to find the best solution for him. I was in the same situation when my golden retriever Rosie got sick a few years ago. She was diagnosed with cancer and hip dysplasia. However, I soon came across CBD. At first, you will probably have a lot of questions about what a CBD is and how it can help your pet. In this article, I wrote the main benefits of CBD for animals that I observed or found out.

What is CBD and how does it work in the body?

A lot has already been written about what CBD is. Most importantly, however, it is a non-psychoactive compound in the hemp plant, which is attributed to many therapeutic properties.

CBD interacts with the body through the endocannabinoid system or ECS. ECS is a biological system found in all mammals and is involved in the management of a variety of biological processes, including memory, sleep, immune response, and more. It consists mainly of two types of cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2). These receptors are designed to interact with endocannabinoids (cannabinoids naturally produced by the brain). However, they can also interact with plant-derived cannabinoids, such as CBD, which in turn cause various reactions throughout the body. More about ECS here.

The most common benefits of CBD for dogs that I have noticed

  1. Works great against pain
  2. Anticonvulsant
  3. It has an anti-inflammatory effect
  4. Relieves stress
  5. It has anti-cancer effects
  6. Supports homeostasis

Let's take a closer look at the list of CBD benefits in dogs:

1. CBD is powerful in the fight against pain

In 1997, a study published in the European Journal of Pharmacology showed that the endocannabinoid system was deeply involved in pain management. Today, CBD is famous for its painkillers. Thus, CBD can help manage pain in many different ways.

Studies have shown that CBD can temporarily increase the absorption of anandamide (a chemical that helps to reduce pain signals in the brain).

2. CBD is a known anticonvulsant

Perhaps one of the most well-known benefits of CBD hemp is its ability to help control seizures, tremors, tics and convulsions. This is because CBD is a natural anticonvulsant (a remedy for treating seizures).

Reports of the natural anticonvulsant properties of CBD first appeared in 2013 when the story of Charlotte Figi, a young girl with epilepsy, gained popularity around the world.

Charlotte's only hope of coping with her 300-week seizures was a tincture now known as Charlotte's Web, made from CBD-rich cannabis. Since then, numerous studies have shown that CBD can help manage a variety of tremors, convulsions and tics. For example, several studies have shown that CBD can help to control seizures caused by epilepsy.

3. CBD has an anti-inflammatory effect

As I mentioned, CBD is known for its anti-inflammatory effects. In fact, the anti-inflammatory effects of CBD are considered to be one of the main reasons why the compound is as useful as a food supplement in the treatment of a wide variety of conditions. The anti-inflammatory effects of CBD are believed to be associated with its ability to interact with receptors in immune cells. CBD interacts with CB2 receptors, which are generally located within immune cells. By activating these receptors, CBD is able to elicit a variety of immune responses - one of these responses is to combat inflammation.

Conditions such as arthritis, MS, irritable bowel disease and many others are characterized by chronic inflammation. In some cases, this inflammation can be caused by a malfunction of the immune system, causing healthy cells to attack. By helping reduce inflammation, CBD can help relieve pain and other symptoms of conditions such as arthritis and others.

4. CBD reduces anxiety and stress

It is important to realize that CBD does not only help to address physical symptoms.

In fact, many studies have shown that CBD can help manage the symptoms of various mental states, including anxiety. Like humans, pets can suffer from anxiety, stress or even specific phobias. And while the exact source of anxiety can vary in pets, it can cause stress and specific physical reactions just like in humans.

Some common forms of anxiety affecting dogs include separation anxiety, noise anxiety, travel anxiety, and even specific phobias.

Some common symptoms of anxiety in dogs include:

  • Permanent barking
  • Chewing (furniture, shoes, rubbish, etc.)
  • Urination and emptying (usually inside the house)
  • Aggression
  • Trembling

CBD has been shown to help reduce feelings of anxiety, thereby reducing these symptoms. But how he does it is not entirely clear.

5. CBD may slow tumour growth

Cancer and harmful tumours are common in domestic animals and in many cases have been shown to be fatal.

To date, no cure for cancer is known, and treatment usually focuses on slowing tumour growth and reducing pain and other symptoms.

Chemotherapy is the most common treatment for cancer and tumours in pets.

Unfortunately, as in humans, chemotherapy can cause a variety of side effects, including:

  • Fatigue and lethargy
  • Loss of appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

However, new research shows that cannabinoids such as CBD can also have unique anti-cancer effects.

For example, a 2011 study conducted at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston showed that CBD can cause programmed cell death, thereby inhibiting breast cancer growth. Another study published by researchers at the University of Naples Federico II in Italy also showed that CBD can help protect against colon cancer in rats by stopping the development, growth and spread of malignancies. Research from Complutense University in Madrid has also shown that CBD and other cannabinoids can enhance the effect of traditional chemotherapy.

6. CBD promotes homeostasis

Homeostasis is best described as the proper functioning of the body or the body in harmonic balance.

It ensures that biological systems work to the best of their ability. Sometimes, however, the body deviates from balance, namely the state when the disease strikes.

New research suggests that the endocannabinoid system plays a key role in maintaining this balance, mainly because it is involved in such a wide range of body processes. Therefore, researchers suggest that by stimulating the endocannabinoid system, cannabinoids such as CBD can help promote homeostasis in the body.

Therefore, many pet owners choose to use CBD not only as a medicine to treat a particular disease but also as a regular supplement to promote the overall health and well-being of their pet.

I will address CBD and its role in promoting homeostasis in more detail in future contributions.

Try CBD with your pets: What to keep in mind

If your animal is suffering from chronic pain, anxiety/stress, epilepsy, or chronic inflammatory conditions such as arthritis or IBD or cancer, I highly recommend you try CBD.

I share the story of our family about my dog Rosie. She had cancer and hip dysplasia.

I did my research and met my vet to discuss the CBD. Then I decided to try it with Rosie.

And the results were incredible. Just a few days after treatment, I saw a huge improvement in Rosie's condition, relief of symptoms and overall quality of life.
