New research ( from a Spanish team at the University of Cantabria in Santander ) has found some promising results for all hemp enthusiasts that suffer from depression (and not only them).
According to the main author, Dr. Raquel Linge, it was proven that on the brains of 40 laboratory rodents that the non-psychoactive hemp substance – cannabidiol (CBD) - can very quickly and very effectively repress symptoms of depression on mice, like their hyperactivity, worsening memory and reduced appetite for sugar when presented as a reward for a carried-out task.
The research was conducted by, removing a part of the laboratory mouse brain called the olfactory bulbus, which is what causes the symptoms of depression (professionally, this procedure is called olfactory bulbectomy - OBX).
The first improvement were observed after only 30 minutes already, while long-term daily application of CBD led to a full suppression of the symptoms of depression caused by the reduced need for sugar and worsened behavioral processes. During researching of ongoing chemical processes, it was found out that cannabidiol stimulated the production of serotonin and glutamate.
The results of this research were published in the April´s edition of the scholarly journal „Neuropharmacology“ and with confirmed conclusions of previous researches, according to which cannabinoids present in the hemp plant can reduce the symptoms of depression and effectively replace synthetic antidepressants whose very common disadvantage are serious side-effects.
