Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a painful condition that needs better treatment than conventional treatment. The National MS Society says on its website that developing treatments for the symptoms of the disease is one of its key priorities. Can hemp help in the case of MS?
Hemp relieves pain
While there are plenty of anecdotal claims to suggest that hemp can generally relieve pain, in 2012 it confirmed a special multiple sclerosis information study at the University of California at San Diego. The study was specifically conducted on patients with multiple sclerosis and the results showed that hemp had reduced pain and spasticity (muscle hardening). While some of 30 participants got hemp, the others were given a placebo. The hemp group has shown pain points that became only half of the pain points of the placebo group.
Side effects of conventional MS drugs can be alleviated by hemp
Some of the side effects of taking medication for the treatment of multiple sclerosis may include anxiety, depression and fatigue. The problems can take from a few days to several months. But medical hemp can be used to reduce these factors and give the patient a sense of well-being.
Weakness and pain in the legs can be treated by hemp
Some patients using wheelchair have claimed that medical hemp helps them walk and exercise. A study conducted in the US and UK in 1997 and published by the European Journal of Neurology found that 70 per cent of respondents had an improvement in several symptoms of hemp consumption. Weakness in the legs was one of the symptoms, along with leg pain and spasticity when walking.
Animal studies of MS indicate a higher survival rate in medical hemp treatment
A 1989 multiple sclerosis info study conducted by W.D. Lyman, published in the Journal of Neuroimmunology, has used rats, mice and guinea pigs with MS CBD and found that THC treatment works much better than placebo treatment.
The study found that 98 percent of the placebo group died, compared to 95 percent of the surviving THC group. The THC group showed a significant reduction in inflammation of brain tissue.
