A tough and demanding sport, which MMA undoubtedly is, puts the highest physical and mental demands on the fighters. It requires discipline, the best physical form, and mental stability. CBD can help fighters significantly in this regard. The properties of this substance suit the needs of this sport (and not only) perfectly. Let's find out more...

What is CBD and how does it work?

CBD or cannabidiol is a substance belonging to the so-called cannabinoids, naturally occurring in the hemp plant. The famous THC belongs to this group, but unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive.

The human body contains what is known as the endocannabinoid system, which is closely linked to other body systems such as the immune and nervous systems. The endocannabinoid system helps regulate and balance these systems. By acting on the receptors of the endocannabinoid system, cannabinoids such as CBD can then increase the activity of this system and thus influence other bodily functions.

For example, CB1 receptors are located in the brain, spinal cord, and other tissues. CB2 receptors are also found here, but most are located in the immune system's tissues. CBD binding to CB1 receptors has a greater effect on the central nervous system, and binding to CB2 receptors has a greater effect on reducing inflammation.

The main goal of the endocannabinoid system is to maintain homeostasis, a state of balance in our bodily functions.

Challenging sports such as MMA are associated with higher levels of pain and physical wear and tear beyond what the endocannabinoid system can normally withstand. By adding CBD, athletes can help this overloaded system maintain homeostasis.

What specific benefits can CBD have for MMA fighters?

CBD is a truly versatile substance and has a wide range of medical and recreational uses. For MMA fighters, it is particularly useful in the following ways:

  • Muscle regeneration. Small tears are commonly formed in muscles during strenuous training, after which muscle mass is gained. The body's response to these tears is inflammation, which is perfectly natural - but their long duration is undesirable and can disrupt a wrestler's program. Because of its anti-inflammatory effects, more and more MMA fighters are reaching for CBD, which can speed up the muscle healing process just as well as many anti-inflammatory drugs, and without the side effects.
  • Analgesic effects. MMA fighters throw and take punches, and sometimes it hurts pretty bad. CBD acts on the nerve pathways through which pain spreads and helps to relieve it.
  • Positive impact on the nervous system. CBD has neuroprotective effects, promoting the formation of new nerve cells and protecting existing ones. Punches to the head, which are common in MMA, can lead to concussion and, in extreme cases, permanent brain damage or so-called 'boxing dementia'. CBD helps to reduce this risk.
  • Better sleep, less stress. Perhaps the biggest benefit of CBD in sports is stress reduction. CBD's action on brain neurotransmitters helps the body suppress anxiety and stress while improving sleep quality. Athletes can continue exercising refreshed and without the body reacting negatively.

A small study by the Ministry of Neuropsychiatry and Medical Psychology at the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil found that CBD can reduce cortisol secretion, thereby reducing the total amount of cortisol in the blood. This property could be a pointer for further exploration of CBD oil for athletes.

What is the position of sports organisations on CBD?

Simply said - they have nothing against it. CBD is a legal substance and you won't find it on the World Anti-Doping Agency's list. Unlike THC. That's why athletes have to keep an eye on the amount of THC when using hemp products. A certain amount of THC is tolerated - 150 ng/ml in a urine test. With CBD products, such as broad-spectrum CBD oils, there is no risk of excessive THC content.

So-called full-spectrum CBD oils have a slightly higher THC content but are still within the legal limits. Wrestlers who don't want to take any risks still prefer to cut out these oils during the testing period.

In general, however, CBD is both completely legal and extremely beneficial. MMA fighters and other athletes alike can enjoy its benefits without fear.

Which Czech fighters choose CBD?

Wrestler and MMA coach Dusan Pala has experience with CBD, and he found exactly what he needed - energy replenishment before training and at the same time boosting recovery after it. The same positive evaluation is also given to hemp protein for energy replenishment. Gradually, he tried and incorporated CBD oil and CBD coffee into his regimen and also tried vaping.

Dusan Pala values hemp products in various forms very highly. He praises their ability to provide energy, but also to regenerate, relax and improve sleep.

Another Czech MMA personality who is in favour of hemp products is Jirí "Denisa" Prochazka, who has commented positively on the regenerative effect of CBD oil. MMA fighter Daniel Ligocki also praises hemp.

From abroad, let's mention at least names like Nate Diaz, Gabby Douglas, Tyron Woodley, Daniel Cormier and many others.

Does CBD have any side effects?

In general, CBD is a very safe substance that does not cause dependence. Its regular use in reasonable amounts (up to 1500 mg) is virtually risk-free. Even so, some people may rarely experience adverse reactions, especially fatigue, lack of appetite, dizziness or digestive problems.

Therefore, when taking CBD, it is recommended to start with smaller amounts, such as 1 drop of CBD drops per day. It also depends on your weight, age and health condition. It is important to follow the package insert for each specific product or consult a medical professional.

Hopefully, your awareness of CBD products has increased with this article and you have made up your own mind about its benefits not only for MMA fighters. Surely you will recognize for yourself that there is nothing to fear with CBD and, on the contrary, much to be gained from it!
