CBD has a lot of positive effects, but there are also a few side effects. Although not many, these include fatigue, nausea, and changes in appetite. If you do experience side effects, it will usually be within the first few days of taking CBD.

What are the side effects of CBD

Generally, people tolerate CBD very well even at higher doses or in the case of long-term use because CBD has very low toxicity. Unlike THC, CBD has no psychoactive side effects.

Most people do not experience any side effects when using CBD. Most studies conducted on animals and humans have shown no side effects from CBD at all. However, some studies do report mild side effects that affect a small percentage of people.

The most common side effects of CBD include:

  • Fatigue
  • Change in appetite
  • Diarrhoea
  • Changes in the liver's ability to metabolize other substances

According to studies, CBD can be taken in higher doses without negative effects. Doses of around 500 mg per day are proven to be safe. However, it is important to note that some people benefit from doses as low as 15 mg per day. Find out what your ideal CBD dose.

Side effects of CBD on drug metabolism

CBD can affect the liver's ability to process certain drugs. In a 2011 report, researchers found that CBD acts as a "potent inhibitor" of enzymes that are part of the process of drug metabolism in the liver.

A class of liver enzymes called Cytochrome P450 is an important part of the process of metabolizing many drugs. CBD inactivates specific types of this enzyme, so the liver has less effect in processing some drugs. Consumption of grapefruit may be similarly related to drugs.

This means that if you are taking any prescription medications, always check with your doctor before combining them with CBD use.

Side effect fatigue

A 2014 study of medical cannabis users found that patients receiving CBD-rich strains were more likely to complain of fatigue. However, the cannabis used in the experiment also contained a lot of THC, so it's not entirely clear to what extent CBD was responsible for the fatigue. THC is known to cause drowsiness. A 2015 study examined the effect of CBD on epilepsy and it was found that fatigue was the most commonly felt side effect.

Side effect of CBD - diarrhoea

Diarrhoea was reported as a common side effect of CBD treatment in a 2015 study on the use of CBD in the treatment of epilepsy. However, it is not clear whether this side effect is only relevant to epilepsy patients, as other studies have found that CBD has no effect on the time it takes for food to pass through the digestive tract (which would be reduced in the case of diarrhoea). It should also be remembered that the dose used during this study was extremely high.

Could a side effect of CBD be a change in appetite?

Several studies have mentioned the appetite changes that CBD use can cause. Participants in a 2014 Dutch study who used a high-CBD variety of marijuana reported minor changes in appetite. However, these were more pronounced in those who also used the THC-rich variety. Because the users were taking THC at the same time as high doses of CBD, it is difficult to determine conclusively whether CBD alone was responsible for the side effects.

How to mitigate the side effects of CBD

To reduce your risk of CBD side effects, always take the right dose and check to see if any medications you are taking interact with CBD.

When determining the correct dose of CBD, it's best to follow the process of slowly increasing the dose until you achieve the desired symptom relief while minimizing side effects. If you are already experiencing side effects, you may be using too high a dose. In this case, we recommend you reduce the dose to the minimum and increase it slowly.

As with all medicines, it is better to take the lowest dose that works. Because the side effects are stronger the higher the dose you take. A smaller amount automatically means less risk of negative side effects.
It's also important to always check with your doctor about negative interactions between CBD and other medications you are currently taking.

Summary of CBD side effects

The positive effects of CBD are proven by many studies. However, it can cause mild side effects in some people. These include fatigue, change in appetite, diarrhoea, and a change in the behaviour of liver enzymes that are responsible for drug metabolism.

In people who have been exposed to HIV, CBD can also have negative effects. If you fall into one of these categories, we recommend not taking CBD.

Always keep an eye on the right dose size to minimize the side effects of CBD. If you take the smallest possible dose that will give you relief, chances are you won't experience any side effects. Because CBD can interfere with the metabolism of some medications, you should always consult your doctor before combining CBD with any other therapy.

To minimize side effects, we recommend starting with the weaker oil with 5% CBD first and then switching to 10% oil or 20% later.
