The constantly evolving family of cannabinoids has a new member again - now there is new research on CBC. In the past few years, CBD (cannabidiol) - hemp cannabinoid - has come to the fore as an active ingredient in the treatment of many health problems such as insomnia, anxiety, pain, depression, seizures, high blood sugar, pathogenic diseases, ADHD, etc. Every day, it seems like a new breakthrough in using CBD as a treatment.

You know that CBD along with THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) - the major cannabinoid of hemp plants - are just two of the possible hundreds of cannabinoids that are present in cannabis plants. In fact, more than 100 cannabinoids have been identified so far, and each of them - although sometimes only occurring in extremely low concentrations - has its own therapeutic benefits. One of the less known cannabinoids that is beginning to enter the mainstream is CBC or Cannabichromene.

What is CBC?

Cannabichromene, also called cannabichrome, pentylcannabichromene, cannabinochromene and cannanbichromene, is a phytocannabinoid that is structurally similar to other cannabinoids such as THC, CBD, and CBN.

Like other cannabinoids, CBC does not actually start as CBC, but rather as cannabichromenoic acid and is produced over time by decarboxylation. CBC is non-psychoactive and interacts with the endocannabinoid system differently from both THC and CBD in that it binds poorly to CB1 and CB2 receptors in the brain.

In 2019, a study was conducted on the often-misunderstood mechanisms of CBC action, which found that CBC acts as a selective CB2 receptor agonist. It has not yet gone through planning under the Convention on Psychotropic Substances, which means that it is legal to use it now.

What study says about CBC?

In fact, studies on CBC go back to the 1981 study that tested the anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifungal properties of CBC in rats. According to research, CBC showed anti-inflammatory effects better than phenylbutazone, an anti-inflammatory drug NSAID. It has also been shown to be a potent antibacterial agent and a mild to moderate fungicide.

In 2010, a study was conducted to investigate how CBD and CBC affect downstream antinociception activity in anesthetized rats. Both cannabinoids were found to produce an antinociceptive response by interacting with various targets involved in pain control. A less complicated way to say this is that both CBD and CBC have been found to help alleviate pain caused by nerve damage by the ability to block pain detection by sensory neuronal cells.

In 2012, it was again seen as an inhibitor of inflammation-induced hypermotility in rats. The researchers looked at CBC as a way of controlling or inhibiting excessive digestive tract in rats caused by inflammation. The results showed a positive correlation between CBC and intestinal motility normalization.

In the 2013 study "Effect of cannabichromene on adult neural stem/progenitor cells", three different phytocannabinoids were examined in relation to adult neural stem progenitor cells in rats. These cells are similar to stem cells but are more specific and play a major role in brain function and overall pathology, which makes them very important. CBC has been found to have a positive effect in assessing the viability of adult progenitor cells of nerve strains in vitro, indicating the protective properties of nerves.

CBC - effects

  • Antimicrobial - CBC fights bacteria. It shows “strong” antibacterial effects on various gram-positive, gram-negative and acid-resistant bacteria
  • Anti-Viral - May play a role in the antiviral effects of cannabis.
  • Anti-inflammatory properties - CBC can reduce swelling and inflammation of the intestinal tract. CBC appears to fight inflammation without activating cannabinoid receptors, CBC produces a stronger effect when combined with other cannabinoids.
  • Analgesic - Reduces pain, although not as strong as THC. CBC contributes to the overall analgesic effects of cannabis. CBC combats pain by “interacting with several targets involved in pain management” at the spine level. CBC is non-psychoactive, scientists hope that these cannabis compounds can be used to treat pain - without high.
  • Antidepressant - Fights depression.Antiproliferative - inhibits the growth of cancerous tumors. This could be due to its interaction with anandamide (endocannabinoid, which means our body produces it naturally). It affects CB1 receptors and CB2 receptors and has been found to combat human breast cancer.
  • Migraines - CBC has also been a successful cure for migraines.

CBC exhibits similar properties to other cannabinoids in terms of its anti-inflammatory properties, pain management, neuroprotectants, fight against pathogenic diseases, antitumor properties, and gastric deposition. Like CBD and THC, the research of this compound continues, and new applications are still coming. Studies have shown that CBC acts alone as a separate treatment and in conjunction with other cannabinoids.

Focus on combinations

While CBD and hemp, in general, have spread to traditional medicine, they differ from standard medicines because they fall into the category of herbal medicine - the so-called natural pathway J. When dealing with plant medicine, it is often advantageous to take only one part of the plant - for example a cannabinoid such as CBC - to isolate it and increase it according to the specific medicinal properties.

This can often be beneficial if we know that particular property of a plant treats a specific disease. Sometimes it's the best answer. Sometimes this is not the case. When dealing with plant medicine, the effect of escorting can be a strong force.

Plants are complex structures made up of various substances. These substances can be beneficial in themselves or combined with other substances inside to create an even stronger reaction, we call it the side effect, but what it really is is a full-plant effect. Instead of focusing on one isolated part of the plant, it focuses on the combination of parts and the added benefit these combinations can bring.

When dealing with cannabinoids such as CBC, CBD, CBN, THC, etc., the idea of what they can do together is often more attractive than what they can achieve in isolation. In this systematic review in 2019, scientists looked at years of research into the isolation of cannabinoids versus the effect of cannabinoid accompaniment and many different applications of both.

Upon review of this research, they found that the concomitant effect often far exceeded that of a single compound. In this review, examples of cannabis applications for microbial diseases, cancer treatments, anti-inflammatory treatments, anticonvulsant properties, etc.
