Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a bioactive element that is extracted from the hemp plant. It is rapidly gaining popularity, especially its health benefits related to its action in the human brain. Experts are confident that cannabidiol does not impair learning ability, focus or short-term memory.

Neurological effects of CBD

The neurological effects are mainly known due to the positive effects of CBD on epilepsy patients. However, CBD has various neurological effects that help us maintain the health of our brains.

Experts are working hard to see if CBD can be used to treat various mental and psychological problems such as ADHD, paranoia, anxiety, and other brain-related issues.

Neuroprotective effect

CBD protects neurons from degradation.

One of the most common diseases that occur as a result of neuronal degeneration is Alzheimer's disease. Studies have shown that CBD can be used in the prevention of Alzheimer's disease because it can protect against neurodegenerative disease. If a person is already suffering from the disease, CBD can be used to delay the onset.

Analgesic effects of CBD

Pain is caused when the brain sends signals to our body's pain receptors. However, in recent research, CBD has been found to counteract pain. CBD acts on the neurons that send pain signals to different parts of the body.

Once CBD inhibits the signals, the transmission stops or the pain sensation stops.

Against anxiety

Did you know that anxiety is caused by long-term stress? A key factor in dealing with anxiety is stress reduction. CBD reduces stress and anxiety. Several studies and experiments and countless user reports show that CBD has strong anxiolytic properties. It can also be used to treat various other brain disorders such as post-traumatic disorders and other related problems.

How CBD works with the central nervous system

Knowing how CBD affects brain cells can help us understand how it can benefit our bodies. Two types of receptors in the brain are responsible for controlling function. These are CB1 and CB2.  CBD is not a psychoactive cannabinoid.

Stress and depression

CBD is thought to affect neuronal action in animals (the location of the brain associated with the connection and organization of memories) through expansion by fixing calcium particles in the mitochondria.

Although studies are still being conducted, it is already being suggested very strongly that something as normal and harmless as CBD may be as successful as a pharmaceutical drug like Valium or diazepam.

Sleep quality

The reports show that taking a certain amount of CBD hemp oil before sleep can actually promote deep, soothing rest. But at lower dosages, it can promote alertness.

In terms of dose, there is a huge delta that can range from 5 mg CBD to 1300 mg depending on the application.

Study: antipsychotic effects of CBD in the human brain!

A study from London has for the first time presented the brain of a patient with psychosis under the influence of cannabidiol (CBD). The study demonstrates the antipsychotic potential of CBD.

Psychosis is a serious mental condition that can be defined as the inability to behave and act in accordance with one's circumstances. It is actually a disassociation between perception, behaviour and experience. Most of the time it is solved with synthetic drugs, but with CBD, everything could change!

An exploratory study from researchers at King's College London in 2017 found that CBD was beneficial in patients suffering from schizophrenia-related psychosis, but exactly what mechanism was at play here seemed unclear.

The study offers valuable insights into how CBD affects the brains of patients with psychosis. The research examined 13 patients with psychosis. Each patient participated in the study in two sessions - the first with a placebo and the second with CBD.

A comparison of placebo psychosis patients with healthy controls revealed significant differences in functional connectivity between the striatum (a deep region of grey matter within the hemispheres of the hindbrain) and the hippocampus (part of the large brain). Under the influence of CBD, however, dysfunctional connectivity was significantly reduced in psychotic subjects.

"This study provides important information about the brain mechanisms that cause the antipsychotic effects of CBD," - explains the senior author of the study, Sagnik Bhattacharyya.

"It provides confidence in the antipsychotic potential of CBD, demonstrating that it targets the function of brain regions involved in psychosis, and showing that even a single dose can alleviate some of the changes in brain function that may underlie psychosis."

The study suggests that CBD somewhat normalizes activity in prefrontal and mediotemporal brain regions in patients with psychosis. The study also noted a temporary reduction in psychotic symptoms after a single dose of CBD.

The research offers valuable evidence based on the growing interest in the antipsychotic effects of CBD. This is particularly useful given the current proliferation of hemp legalization around the world.

A demonstration epidemiological study conducted last year revealed a clear association between increased THC levels in common hemp strains and an increase in the incidence of psychotic disorders. Although the links between hemp use and schizophrenia are still a matter of serious debate, studies increasingly suggest that high levels of THC can be dangerous, and a balance between CBD and THC in hemp strains is necessary to counterbalance the negative mental health effects resulting from frequent use.

Bhattacharyya points out that this new imaging study will hopefully lay the groundwork for future clinical trials to clearly define how effective CBD can be as a clinical antipsychotic tool to treat a variety of different psychiatric conditions.

"The results are an important part of the picture that scientific research is building on the effects of CBD and will help justify the need for further clinical trials of CBD use in various stages of psychosis, as well as other neuropsychiatric diseases such as Parkinson's disease, in which some patients may also have psychotic symptoms," Bhattacharyya concludes.
