Your immune system plays a vital role in your health as it protects your body from harmful infections and viruses. It creates, stores and distributes the white blood cells of your body that fight the bacteria and viruses that attack it. CBG promotes immunity, defences, and the proper functioning of the heart and nervous system.

CBG and the endocannabinoid system

As we already know, cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid system. The built-in endocannabinoid (ECS) system of the human body works to keep the body in its balanced state of homeostasis. While there are specific details about how cannabinoids work, the endocannabinoid system generally performs several functions specific to each area of the body. In turn, the endocannabinoid (ECS) system is an integral part of how our immune system self-regulates and maintains a healthy self-defense balance without harming itself. However, sometimes the immune response is disproportionate to the degree of damage. This leads to an immune attack on healthy tissue, a condition known as autoimmunity. Autoimmunity is the damaging component of many common diseases, from arthritis to Crohn's disease to Alzheimer's disease.

CBG effects

CBG is not a psychoactive substance. In addition, CBG is a CB1 receptor antagonist, meaning it acts directly on the human nervous system. It is believed that CBG inhibits the uptake of GABA in the brain, which in turn reduces general anxiety and muscle tension.
As a CB1 antagonist, cannabigerol may negate some of the effects of THC. Some recreational users do not like this because it could lead to a lower value of "high" effect. Others may prefer this because it could eliminate some of the fears and paranoia associated with high THC strains. However, the exact way in which THC and CBG interact is not fully understood.
Cannabigerol may also interact with properties of CBD, as CBG has been shown to eliminate some of the anti-nausea effects of CBD due to its reverse effect on the 5HT (1A) receptor.

CBG benefits and usage

The medical benefits of CBG are still under investigation, but the list is impressive and growing. It is important to note that most of the evidence comes from preclinical studies, which means that the safety and efficacy of CBG in humans still needs to be proven. However, studies on CBG have revealed a variety of potential benefits.

  • Stimulation of bone formation and healing

A 2007 study examined the effects of CBG and other cannabinoids on bone marrow cultures. The results showed that they can stimulate bone marrow stem cells indirectly via the CB2 receptor. This suggests that CBG and other cannabinoids may help in healing bone fractures by promoting new bone growth and formation.

  • Slowing the tumor growth

A review article from 2009 reported that CBD, CBG and CBC, along with other cannabinoids, slowed the progression and growth of various tumors and cancer cells. By slowing down tumor growth, these cannabinoids could extend the life of people fighting cancer.
One study found that cannabigerol inhibits the growth of colon cancer cells. This research also confirms that cannabigerol has many modes of interaction that also bind to the many previously discussed receptors. The ability of cannabigerol to block TRPM8 gives cannabigerol the anti-cancer properties, and the same mechanism also showed it helps with prostate cancer.
Another indicates the antitumor activity of CBG on skin cancer cells. It seems clear that cannabigerol could help with many different cancers.

One study compared many different treatment options for their ability to kill a specific type of cancer cell. Of all the tested, CBG was the most successful in reducing cancer cell growth.

While we have already shown that current research suggests using THC and CBD in tandem to treat cancer, cannabigerol may also be combined.

  • Antifungal and antibacterial treatment

The antifungal and antimicrobial properties of various cannabinoids, including CBG, are currently under investigation. CBG proved to be highly effective against MRSA in a 2008 study. MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is a widely used antibiotic-resistant bacterial strain.

  • Pain relief

It is known that CBG and other cannabinoids have analgesic effects under various conditions, including pain caused by multiple sclerosis and cancer. Due to its analgesic effect, CBG is believed to be a great painkiller for conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and pain caused by some cancers, as well as many soft tissue diseases.

  • Reduction of inflammation

According to the study, CBG has the ability to reduce inflammation by targeting the specific molecules responsible for inflammation in various disease states, including pain syndromes, cancer and even inflammatory bowel disease. For example, studies show that CBG can act as a COX-2 inhibitor, similar to widely used pharmaceuticals called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

  • Overactive bladder treatment

Hemp and cannabinoid preparations were used to treat various bladder dysfunction. In a 2015 study, researchers tested the effects of CBG and other cannabinoids on experimentally induced bladder contractions. CBG and THCV showed the strongest ability to reduce bladder contractions.

  • Psoriasis and skin treatment

CBG and other cannabinoids may be useful in the treatment of various skin conditions due to the presence of cannabinoid receptors in the skin. In a 2007 study, CBG was shown to inhibit keratinocyte proliferation, suggesting a role of CBG in the treatment of psoriasis.

Remarkably, all the cannabinoids tested had this effect, even when the CB1 and CB2 receptors were blocked, suggesting that another unknown mechanism is responsible for these properties.

  • Glaucoma treatment

It has long been suggested that hemp helps alleviate the severe eye pain associated with glaucoma. A 1990 study, conducted by the Department of Ophthalmology at the West Virginia University Health Sciences Center, found that CBG, among other compounds, increased the aqueous humor to lower intraocular pressure and provide other relief.

  • Depression and anxiety treatment

Recent research also suggests that CBG has analgesic and antidepressant properties that have potentially painkilling and mood-balancing effects. It is well known that THC can help patients suffering from depression and anxiety. It has been found that CBG has similar effects but without causing the intoxicating effect known for THC. A 2016 report suggests that non-psychoactive cannabinoids such as CBG may be a potential alternative to the treatment of anxiety and depression.

  • Neuroprotective effects

In a 2015 study of animal models of Huntington's disease, CBG proved to be "extremely active as a neuroprotector". Treatment with CBG improved movement and recovery in HD mice and protected neurons from degeneration. CBG also showed potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. The researchers concluded that CBG should be further investigated as a treatment for neurodegenerative diseases.
